Town maps now show the comune’s official border
Each town map now outlines the comune’s official administrative boundary (ISTAT) and frames the view to the whole territory — so you can see a town’s true size and shape at a glance, not just a point on the map.
- Jul 13, 2026web 0.0.3.48Feature
“On the coast” now finds every coastal town
The coastal filter now uses real coastline proximity (towns within ~10 km of the sea) instead of a sparse beach label, so it no longer misses genuinely coastal comuni. Pairs with the national-scale filter fix so “On the coast” is now both reliable and complete.
- Jul 12, 2026web 0.0.3.47Feature
All town filters now work across the whole country
The coastal, surroundings, facilities and population-trend filters now load reliably even as coverage grows toward every Italian comune — and the homepage loads much faster. Previously these could show no matches once the dataset got large.
- Jun 26, 2026web 0.0.3.33Feature
The “what’s around” view is now a real map
You can now see a town’s surroundings on an actual map — the town pinned at the centre with nearby features around it — and switch to the quick compass view any time. Same honest rule: we only place what we could locate.
- Jun 25, 2026web 0.0.3.32Feature
See what’s around each town — at a glance
Town pages now have a “What’s around” compass: the town at the centre, with nearby features placed by direction and distance — sea, forest, vineyards and thermal springs on one side; busy roads, railways or industrial zones on the other, so you can see at a glance what you’d gain and what to check. As always, we only place what we could actually locate and never guess a direction.

Coverage is expanding toward all of Italy
Borgo Data started with a hand-picked set of towns. Behind the scenes it now works through the whole country in parallel, adding comuni in waves — so the map and search keep filling in, on the way to all ~7,900 Italian municipalities. Towns appear only once their core data is in place, and where something genuinely isn’t available for a town we leave it blank rather than guess. Expect new towns to show up steadily rather than all at once.
- Jun 22, 2026web 0.0.3.29New data
The map now shows the real number of towns
The map of Italy used to show an out-of-date count of towns and regions, frozen from an earlier point. It now counts straight from the towns currently published, so the “N towns across M regions” line and the highlighted areas always match what you can actually explore — and update on their own as towns are added.
- Jun 21, 2026web 0.0.3.28Feature
“My own priorities” joins the groups — and ranks from the first choice
Setting your own priorities now lives alongside the people-groups as “My own priorities”, since it ranks towns rather than filtering them. It also now ranks from the very first thing you pick (it used to need two before scores appeared, which made it feel inconsistent). New filter chips were added too — “Stable / growing” and “Expat community” — plus new themes for towns with an expat community and truly tiny villages.
- Jun 21, 2026web 0.0.3.27Feature
Clearer doorways + an easy way back
The two ways to start are now clearly labelled: people-groups rank every town (nothing hidden, just ordered), while themes filter to only the towns that match. And once you’ve started from any doorway, a “Start over” button takes you straight back to the full set of options.
- Jun 21, 2026web 0.0.3.26Feature
Describe what you want — and share your search
A new box lets you describe a town in plain words — “quiet seaside town near a hospital, under 2,000” — and it sets the matching filters, group and priorities for you, showing exactly what it set so you can adjust. Any search you build can now be copied as a link to share or bookmark, and it reopens exactly as you left it.
- Jun 20, 2026web 0.0.3.23Feature
The map and the list now talk to each other
Filtering the towns now lights up the map: pick a factor, a nearby feature, a search or a population cap and only the regions — then provinces, then comuni — that actually contain matching towns stay highlighted. And the reverse already worked: drilling into a region or province on the map narrows the list to that area.
- Jun 20, 2026web 0.0.3.22Feature
Start from who you are — and a leaner first page
A new “Who’s moving?” row lets you pick Retiree, Family, Remote worker, Student, Expat, Investor, Culture lover or Seasonal worker, and see every town ranked for that group. The home page no longer lists all towns up front — the list appears once you choose a lens (a search, a filter, the map, a group, or your own priorities), so what you see always has a clear order. Town pages also got a real “Back” that returns to wherever you came from.
- Jun 20, 2026web 0.0.3.21Feature
Rank towns by your own priorities
A new “My priorities” panel lets you set how much you personally care about each of 14 things — coast, healthcare, quiet, cost, schools and more. Every town then gets a personalised fit score and the list sorts by it. It’s saved on your own device only — no account, nothing sent to us — and it uses the same transparent scoring method as the rest of the site.
- Jun 20, 2026web 0.0.3.18Feature
Explore Italy on a real map
The home page now opens on a map of Italy you can drill into: click a region to see its provinces, click a province to see its comuni, where the towns we cover are highlighted and open straight to their page. It loads progressively, so it stays fast even though it covers the whole country.
- Jun 20, 2026web 0.0.3.17Feature
The full scoring method, published
The methodology page now shows exactly how the fit scores work: what 0%, 50% and 100% mean for each factor, the full set of weights for all eight audiences, and a real worked example (a town scored for a retiree) where every number is shown and adds up in front of you.
- Jun 19, 2026web 0.0.3.13Feature
Sources on every town + the “What’s new” page
Each town page gained a source strip linking to where its data actually comes from — OpenStreetMap at the town’s location, the comune’s site, the photo source, ISTAT — with the last-updated date. This updates page was added.
- data 0.0.2.128New data
Corrected the EU recovery-fund (PNRR) figures on town pages
Some town pages were showing wrong PNRR funding totals — a join error let a few small comuni inherit huge national railway payments, which pushed “share paid” above 100%. The figures now join correctly per project and keep the latest cumulative snapshot, and we withhold an execution percentage rather than show an impossible one. If a town looked oddly over-funded before, it reads accurately now.
- Jun 19, 2026data 0.0.2.114Database
The footer shows which version built the surroundings data
Surroundings refresh on their own schedule, so the dataset now records that separately (proximity_version / loaded-at in the meta table) and the footer shows it — you can see how current each part is.
- data 0.0.2.51New data
Fixed foreign-resident counts that were reading low
A column-matching bug in the ISTAT citizenship files was picking up only part of each town’s foreign-resident figure, so some counts showed lower than reality. The parser now reads the correct total, so the foreign-resident numbers and the top-citizenship breakdowns on town pages are accurate.
- Jun 18, 2026web 0.0.3.12Feature
“How we know this” — methodology + traceability
Added a methodology page explaining, per source, what it provides, its licence, refresh cadence and limits — sourced and dated, never claimed as “verified true.”
- Jun 17, 2026web 0.0.3.11Feature
“Italy first. Europe next.” real map
Replaced the hand-drawn blob on the home page with a real muted map of Europe — the live country (Italy) filled in, the rest waiting in grey — so it lights up country-by-country as coverage expands.
- Jun 16, 2026web 0.0.3.10 · data 0.0.2.104Feature
Filter towns by their surroundings
Filter for what’s around a town — near a river, lake, coast, forest, mountain or park; away from industry, busy roads, railways, quarries. Built from OpenStreetMap; “not nearby” means “not mapped within range,” shown honestly as unknown. (Surroundings data added to the dataset in crawler 0.0.2.104.)
- web 0.0.3.4Database
Dataset build version shown in the footer
The footer began showing the data-build id, town count and roster change — distinguishing the data generation (which moves on every rebuild) from the crawler/code version.
- web 0.0.3.3New data
Town photos
Town pages show one real, openly-licensed photo (Wikimedia Commons / Openverse) with visible attribution. Towns with no suitable free photo show none — never a generic stand-in.
- web 0.0.3.0Feature
New landing page — map + honest collections
A Zillow-style entry point instead of a town list: a search bar and filter chips beside an interactive map of Italy (towns placed by coordinates), plus curated honest “collections” (coastal & small, actually holding on, 1€ schemes live, best-rated). The full list appears only once you’ve narrowed it.
- web 0.0.2.1Feature
Search & filter — the decision tool (+ manifesto)
The directory became a decision tool: tap-to-require / exclude filters for near-coast, 1€ scheme, school nearby and facilities, plus max-population and min-livability, with a live result count. A town with no data for a required trait is excluded, never guessed. Added the “What we believe” page.
- web 0.0.2.0Feature
Scores, explanations & a provenance footer
Every factor row shows a 0–100% score with a tooltip explaining what it measures, plus a footer showing the data’s provenance (crawler version, town count, last load) read from the database.
- web 0.0.1.8New data
Leisure & facilities
Added a leisure & facilities panel (pool, gym, spa, tennis, golf, playground, park, pitches, paths) with nearest-km or count-within-radius, and honest “none nearby” / “not mapped” handling.
- web 0.0.1.7Feature
Audience fit shows its reasoning
Tapping an audience under “Who this town suits” reveals what drove the score — the top contributing factors with their basis (e.g. “supermarket 0.2km”) and which cared-about factors had no data.
- web 0.0.1.1Feature
First site — town profiles, search, honest unknowns
The first build: home page with a searchable town grid, full per-town profiles (audience-fit spectrum, population trend + ISTAT projection, age chart, service distances, foreign citizenships, 1€-scheme detail), the Supabase data layer and design system, with “unknown” handled honestly throughout.
- data 0.0.1.39Coverage
National catalogue + selection model
The crawler gained a national comune catalogue and an enable-flag selection model, so the active roster (currently 25 towns) can scale far beyond the initial seed set.
Behind the scenes
Infrastructure milestones — how the data actually gets made. These don’t change what you see directly, but they’re what lets coverage grow and stay current.
- Jun 23, 2026crawler 0.0.2.150
A pipeline that can cover all of Italy
Borgo Data was rebuilt to work through every Italian comune in parallel — several machines each taking a different batch, coordinating through a shared queue so they never overlap, and crawling the country in waves instead of a small fixed list. If a machine stops mid-way, its batch is simply picked up again. This is what lets coverage grow toward all ~7,900 towns.
- crawler 0.0.2.146
One shared data store, no duplicated work
Every run — in the cloud or on a laptop — now reads and writes one shared, compressed store, so nothing is fetched twice and each run only does what is still missing or out of date. Progress is never lost: a run can stop and resume safely.
- crawler 0.0.2.149
Faster, leaner data builds
The build step now reads each national statistics file once per run instead of once per town, and every run keeps to a fixed time budget — so the pipeline stays efficient and predictable as coverage scales up.
